Community Outreach Program

The overall goal of the Community Outreach Program is to use community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles and methodology to increase knowledge of, access to, and use of beneficial biomedical and behavioral procedures that will ultimately decrease the cancer burden in Appalachian counties in Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia,and West Virginia. The Community Outreach Program is working to accomplish the following specific aims:

  1. Engage the Appalachian community to identify, design, and implement community-based health disparity assessments, interventions, programming, and evaluations, with emphasis in new areas such as biobanking and clinical trials; and the use of beneficial biomedical and behavioral procedures to reduce the cancer burden;
  2. Identify existing educational resources and create additional materials for Appalachian populations appropriate for literacy level and culture to educate communities about cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, clinical trials, health literacy, and biomedical procedures;
  3. Integrate a Community Health Educator (CHE) and the National Cancer Institute’s National Outreach Network (NON) with ACCN;
  4. Provide community funding for innovative evidence-based projects through a community mini-grants system; and
  5. Disseminate evidence-based information for reducing disparities to community members, health care providers, and decision and policy makers at the local, state, and federal levels.
