VIRGINIA ACCN REGIONAL OFFICE

The Virginia ACCN regional office is based at the Institute for Community Health at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, VA.  The Virginia ACCN has working relationships with both communities and state agencies that focus on cancer prevention and treatment and other health issues.  The Virginia ACCN works with partners on training, program planning, and evaluation activities.

As in many Appalachian counties, cancer mortality in Southwestern Virginia is higher than either national or state norms.  In the state’s three planning districts that are within the Appalachian region, the mortality rate is higher than the norm by 10 cases per 100,000 residents.  The challenges in reducing cancer incidence and mortality in the region are daunting, and economic, social, and environmental factors pose major cancer risk factors to citizens in the region.  The Virginia ACCN is working with communities and other partners to reduce these risks.
